As UK travel restrictions continue to ease, many Britons will be eager to spend time abroad this winter before the beginning of the new year. Known for being one of Britain’s most popular airlines, Ryanair has today launched their Black Friday sales for 2021.

Buy one get one free means you can buy a flight for a loved one and travel for free with them, or vice versa.

To claim the offer, all Ryanair customers need to do is visit the airline’s website, Ryanair.com.

The deal will be live on the website from 2pm today, November 25, until midnight on Friday, November 26.

This leaves customers with little time to claim the offer and avoid missing out.


Dara Brady, Ryanair’s Director of Marketing, said: “Black Friday has come early at Ryanair as we unveil our amazing ‘Buy One Get One Free’ offer, with one million seats available for travel across 1,000 routes from December 1, 2021, to February 18, 2022.

“Customers can book a well-deserved city break or a long overdue holiday and bring a plus one completely free – the ultimate Black Friday bargain.

“We’ve no doubt that this amazing offer will be snapped up quickly, especially with Christmas in near sight, so we encourage customers to act fast and visit the Ryanair.com website before midnight Friday, November 26, to avail of this brilliant Black Friday offer.”

But with Black Friday approaching, Ryanair is not the only airline offering discounted prices this week.

Customers can either claim £200 or £100 off a holiday package deal, depending on how much they are willing to spend.

To save up to £200 on holidays, Britons must spend a minimum of £2,000.

Meanwhile, to save £100 on holidays, holidaymakers must spend a minimum of £700.

To claim both deals, customers should use the code BLACKFRIDAY at the checkout.

This code is valid on all breaks departing from December 6, 2021, to October 31, 2023.

Does Black Friday Matter to Travelers Anymore?

As tour sales indicate, depressed demand for international trips means you may find sales there.

For example, while you won’t find a huge deal at The Broadmoor’s Cloud Camp wilderness property near Colorado Springs — which, on the heels of a very busy year, is offering a Cyber Monday sale of 10 percent off select 2022 stays that normally start at $1,055 — you will find deals in Chile. There, Tierra Hotels, which operates remote lodges in Patagonia, Chiloe and the Atacama Desert, is offering its first-ever seasonal sale at 40 percent off stays booked Nov. 29 for travel through April 30, 2022 and 30 percent off stays beyond that, through April 2023 (two nights minimum). Rates, which include meals and guided excursions, normally start at $800 a person a day.

Sales on big-ticket, far-flung places include a few small ships in the Galápagos. Metropolitan Touring will add a two-night stay at Quito’s boutique Casa Gangotena, valued at $1,120, on Black Friday for most 2022 Galápagos bookings, which start at $4,052 for five days on a 40-guest yacht.

Ecoventura will offer 15 percent off its 20-person-yacht Galápagos cruises, which start at $8,950 a person before the discount on select 2022 departures January to March booked Nov. 25 through 30 (email info@galapagosnetwork.com to book).

The year-old Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf on St. Bart in the Caribbean will hold its first Black Friday sale from Nov. 26 to 29, with 15 percent off suites, which normally start at $990, plus daily breakfast, a yoga or Pilates class, two massages, airport transfers and a $50 food-and-beverage credit. Blackout dates include the first week of January and March 16 to 20.

While you will see Black Friday cruise deals from lines like Royal Caribbean and Holland America, you may also see them during “wave season,” a sales period that runs roughly from mid-January to March when the majority of bookings take place, encouraged by incentives.

“Wave season is kind of considered our Black Friday, but prepandemic, wave season started earlier and earlier,” sometimes in November, said Michelle Fee, the chief executive and founder of Cruise Planners, a travel agency.

Still, she recommends booking early as a risk-free way to get what you want — such as the exact dates, ships and cabins — since most cruise lines will re-price your deal should the fares drop before your final payment is due.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday travel deals are back with a vengeance

The travel industry is already rolling out Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals for those whose holiday shopping lists include experiences, reunions with friends and family, and bucket list adventures.

“Sweaters are nice, but what people really want this holiday season is a warm embrace from family and friends,” said Mike Daher, the vice chair of U.S. transportation, hospitality and services for Deloitte.

With 42 percent of Americans planning to travel from Thanksgiving to mid-January, Daher doesn’t anticipate that travel sites, airlines, hotels or other attractions will extend many promotions and discounts for travel during the holiday season. But that doesn’t mean eager travelers won’t be looking for bargains now and into the new year.

“Although holiday travel demand is expected to reach 2019 levels, travelers are still very hungry for deals as a result of widespread consumer inflation,” said Brett Keller, the CEO of Priceline. “Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals are now even more important than ever as consumers are looking for ways to save money.”

As they did last year, many companies are kicking off their sales early. Flexibility is still the watchword. But while some properties are offering their best deals, others may be pulling back a bit from last year’s fire sale offers.

The Nines, a Luxury Collection hotel on the top floors of the historic former Meier & Frank department store building in downtown Portland, Oregon, is offering its deepest discounts ever. From Black Friday through Cyber Monday, king rooms, regularly $289, can be booked for $199, while the presidential suite can be had for $1,999, instead of $4,299, for stays from Dec. 1 to March 31.

“We want travelers back in Portland so they can see how we’re thriving,” said Kasey Connor, the Nines’ director of sales and marketing. “A great deal can be the determining factor for any traveler on the hunt.”

The Caribbean island of St. Lucia has more than 30 hotel and villa deals for Cyber Monday. Discounts at some properties may be slightly less in percentage than they were last year, but there are still extremely generous deals, said Colette McDermott, the marketing manager for St. Lucia’s tourism association.

Hurtigruten will offer 50 percent off most of the expedition cruise line’s destinations online from Nov. 22 to 30. The cruise line has also lowered its deposit requirement from 20 percent to 10 percent for the sale.

Virgin Voyages, Richard Branson’s new adults-only cruise line, is offering 20 percent off voyages on Black Friday/Cyber Monday for both Scarlet Lady’s Caribbean voyages and Valiant Lady’s European voyages.

Tour operators, such as the luxury travel company Abercrombie & Kent and EF Ultimate Break, which offers Gen Z- and millennial-tailored group travel experiences, will offer Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals on adventures through 2022 and beyond.

Xanterra, which owns or operates lodges in Yellowstone, Zion, Glacier and Death Valley national parks and the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, will offer a “Book Your Bucket List” sale from Nov. 23 to Nov. 30.

For those who book from Nov. 26 to 30, Rosewood Hotels & Resorts will offer up to 50 percent off the best available rates at its urban properties and up to 30 percent off at its resort properties, exceeding last year’s discounts.

Viceroy Hotels & Resorts discounts will be up to 35 percent across the brand, with flexible cancellation policies.

Graduate Hotels, with locations in 30 university towns in the U.S., as well as Oxford and Cambridge in the U.K., plans a Cyber Monday sale with discounts of up to 50 percent. Book by Dec. 3 for stays through March 31.

Finding the best deals during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping frenzy can be stressful, so experts recommend writing up a wish list of destinations and travel times and doing some homework on current prices to recognize the deals.

Sign up for newsletters and frequent travel programs for airlines, hotels, destinations and online travel agencies to get early bird offers, which often come with extra discounts. Check to see whether the destination you want to visit has a Black Friday or Cyber Monday landing page that shows all the deals in one place. And before you hit “buy” on any booking, check the cancellation and change rules, which may be more restrictive than they were last year.

With the season of giving fast approaching, ANZ and ING predict more Australians than ever before are set to take advantage of discounts and bag a bargain.

Households are well placed to spend big on retail at the back end of this year, with one of the big four estimating end-of-year spending on retail to be closer to pre-COVID times.

ANZ’s Economic Insight Data report highlights strong household deposits and savings recorded throughout the year coupled with the improved resilience in the labour market through Delta lockdowns, have given the average Australian household a strong buffer for end-of-year spending.

ANZ believes the recency of reopened international and interstate borders may also suppress travel spending, leading to more retail spending compared to pre-COVID levels.

In combining these factors, ANZ expects Black Friday to be the biggest retail sales day of the end-of-year trading period for 2021.

A study across 1,000 participants conducted by YouGov and commissioned by ING, revealed 64% are more likely to take advantage of Black Friday sales this year compared to previous years.

This comes on the back of suggestions that the financial impact of the pandemic has led Aussie adults to expect a bigger bargain from retailers, with ING noting 69% of Australians are expecting significant discounts, and 21% admitting they have grown to expect more for less in the past year.

However ANZ notes that despite the desire for significant discounts, they may not eventuate due to supply chain constraints or inflationary pressures.

ING believes this will not prevent Aussies from taking part, with 51% of savvy shoppers already preparing for the sales by comparing websites for the cheapest deals, 41% searching for retailers who have free delivery and 15% of Australian shoppers are even partnering with a friend or family member to buy in bulk.

Spending tips

Head of Daily Banking at ING, George Thompson, has noted some tips to navigate the sales safely, yet effectively:

  1. Stick to a budget – Setting a price point of what you are able to spend based on your personal budget is key to avoid overspending and impulse purchases. 
  2. Shop safely and watch out for scams – If shopping online, shop on a genuine and reputable website. Verify any trust seals on the site, check for contact details, review privacy and security policies and save all transaction details including receipts.
  3. Plan for 2022 – Shopping the sales sensibly can actually help you get ahead of 2022 events and calendar moments that are traditionally heavy on the wallet.
  4. Avoid Christmas postage delays – With deliveries setting records this year, Australia Post has brought forward their Christmas deadlines.
  5. Watch out for international transaction feesif you’re planning on shopping through an international site during the sales, make sure your aware of the fees and charges your bank might apply.

Generally the sales offer a wide range of great value discounts, but knowing exactly what you want and doing a bit of research beforehand can make all the difference.

  • Be wary of unusual brands you haven’t heard of with dirt-cheap deals – there is a reason why some brands are household names and that’s their quality.
  • Look at the price not the “saving” as it’s important not to assume a deal is worth it just because it offers a big discount. Ask yourself if the discounted price is actually good value for the product.
  • Check the returns policy. It’s important to make sure you know if you can get a refund on bad deals compared to the retailer only allowing exchanges or no returns at all.

Bargain hunters are also being warned by Which? about dud Black Friday “deals” that you should avoid at all costs due to their poor quality.

Every year the consumer champion puts thousands of products through laboratory tests to separate the best from the rest.

When it uncovers products that fail to perform, it rates them as Don’t Buys.

Some of these products are up for grabs in Black Friday sales this year at retailers such as Amazon, AO.com, Currys PC World and John Lewis.

Which? is now urging shoppers to steer clear of the products during the sale bonanza no matter how good the discounts are.

The dud deals include a stair gate that failed a safety test, a tepid toaster and a vacuum cleaner that doesn’t do the dirty work.

  • The Baby Dan Premier True Pressure stair gate, available for £29 at Amazon, failed the “fatigue test” conducted by Which?.
  • Toast fans should avoid buying the Russell Hobbs Luna 23221 2 Slice Toaster, available at AO.com for £29, Which? added.
  • The Maxi Cosi Beryl car seat – advertised for £255 at John Lewis – also scraped only an average score in car seat crash tests.
  • Shoppers are also being warned to shun the Bush 60185FFWTD fridge freezer, which is said to be slow to cool freshly-added items down.

How Black and Hispanic Millennials Are Looking Outside of 401k’s for Investing

“We almost went bankrupt,” he said. “We lost almost $350,000.” To date, Mr. Napoleon has been able to replenish only a fraction of the savings he poured into the business, dealing a major setback to his long-term plan to buy property and create a stream of rental income.

“I’ve always made it my goal to be financially free,” Mr. Napoleon said. “My family is dirt poor,” he said. “Luck is what provides their stability.” It was frustrating now, he said, to realize that his credit score had sunk under the weight of the debt he accrued when his cash flow plunged. Now he effectively has to start over.

Mr. Napoleon said his family home in Brooklyn where he and his four siblings, one of whom has special needs, grew up has been in foreclosure for more than a decade. “They worked real hard as immigrant Americans to get their home,” he said. “One of my reasons for wanting to retire early is to spend time with my parents and provide something.”

A sense of obligation to provide for parents and sometimes extended families burdens the finances of many millennials with roots in immigrant communities, said Shellise Rogers, 30, who grew up in Trinidad and New York City and has gone to Score for advice. She now lives in New York and has her own business as an accountant and business coach.

“It’s more about building up for the family versus for the individual,” she said. “Definitely, as someone who’s in finance and accounting and has lots of clients of color, I notice that there’s a need for an immediate cash flow” for many people, she said. Compared with reinvesting in their business, “adding to a 401(k) doesn’t seem as fruitful.”

Mr. Duplessi said he had decided to put money in a 401(k) when he finally got the chance to open an account two years ago when he became eligible to do so through his union. But he said he’s not sure how much to trust it, since both of his parents lost money in their accounts during the financial crisis in 2008 and he was unable to make any contributions when the hotel where he worked closed during the pandemic.

Many Black and Hispanic workers don’t even have the option of opening a 401(k). Federal Reserve data shows that 68 percent of white working-age families have access to employer-sponsored defined-contribution plans such as 401(k)s compared with only 56 percent of Black workers and 44 percent of Hispanic workers who have access to such plans.

Book Review: “Travel in Black” and “Travel in Black” | Lifestyle

You always wanted to do it. You just wanted to go.

You jump into a car or van and don’t think about GPS, maps, actual itineraries, or destinations. Point the headlights in one direction and drive until you get where you need them. No timetables, no worries … and your ancestors don’t have a chance to do just that. So this summer, catch you and respect their wandering habits and read these two new books with similar titles …

First, history: it had to start somewhere – but where? You can imagine how black liquidity was affected by slavery, but how and why did it last? Sure, it wasn’t arbitrary, it wasn’t just “No, I can’t travel here.” So how did black migration restrictions occur, how did African Americans fight the system, and why is it important now? In “Traveling Black” (Belknap, Harvard University Press, $ 35.00), author Mia Bay answers these questions. This begins when the trip was primarily a carriage type.

Starting with Plessy v. Ferguson, Bay may wait for travelers along the journey, how racism in travel began, how it spreads along roads and railroads, and then to accommodations. Explain the uncertainty of what is not. Bay separates each mode of travel and examines how travel was sometimes used as an activist to see how the Jim Crow method affected black travelers in different ways.

But now you are free to travel not only in the United States, but around the world as needed. In “Travelling While Black” (Hurst, $ 19.95), author Nanjala Nyabola talks about her travels and the importance of skin color on the move.

Sure, what would it be like to travel as a black woman when the guidebook wasn’t written with black women in mind? How can you draw a line to travel now from African Americans on the old road? And now you can travel, what does it tell you about yourself?

These are just a few examples that Nyabora ponders when taking readers from Haiti to the Far East, Mexico, Africa, Europe, and the Southern United States. She suffers and thinks about the need for literature in black culture, identity, asylum, and the meaning of the house.

This is the kind of book you want to go somewhere, but want to read when you’re trapped in your house for some reason. Nyabora goes to popular places, but also to places that adventurers generally want. This gives the reader a sense of travel with unusual tips. Her thoughts about where she goes make this a book you don’t want to put. Her observations will please you that she took you with her.

If these don’t exactly fit what you’re looking for, there are plenty of other books you can find in your local library or bookstore. As always, always seek help from a librarian or bookstore. They are good at finding what you are looking for. Do it today. Just go.
