FIBA: USA women finish friendly schedule with 93-62 win vs. Nigeria

The USA Basketball women’s national team finished their friendly schedule before the 2020 Olympics with a 93-62 blowout win over Nigeria on Sunday afternoon in Las Vegas.

In the game, the Americans held the Nigerians to just 30.6 percent shooting while they shot 53.8 percent overall. They outscored Nigeria in all four quarters of the game, though only by one point in the third quarter.

While A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart led with 16 points/10 rebounds and 14 points/6 assists, respectively, it was good to see Washington Mystics guard Ariel Atkins score 5 points off the bench in 12 minutes. This was a nice play she made during the game.

Tina Charles was scoreless tonight but only attempted two shots. She instead grabbed 9 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 23 minutes. Given how Wilson and Stewart were playing, there was no need for her to play like the WNBA-leading scorer she is.

For Nigeria, Atonye Nyingifa led with 9 points. Atlanta Dream center Elizabeth Williams also played 29 minutes, scoring 4 points. However, she and Los Angeles Sparks forward are appealing FIBA’s decision to deny their appeal to switch their FIBA nationalities from American to Nigerian.

Nneka’s younger sister, Chiney Ogwumike, was allowed to play for Nigeria, but she is also appealing FIBA’s decision to classify her as a naturalized citizen. Chiney didn’t play today. The Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAB) is reviewing their cases.

As for the Americans, they will now travel to Tokyo to adjust to playing in Japanese time before the Olympics. Their first game in the group stage will also be against Nigeria on July 27. Tip-off is at 12:40 a.m. ET.
