The NFL isn’t unveiling the entire slate of 2021 regular season schedules until later today, but the broadcast networks like Fox and CBS gave everyone a sneak peek this morning by unveiling the Week 1 games.
The Chargers begin the new campaign on the road at Washington. Opening kickoff is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start.
The Washington Football Team, winners of the AFC East in 2020, are one of of five playoff teams that the Chargers will face during the regular season. The others include the Chiefs, Steelers, Ravens, and Browns. WFT was one of the unusual cases where a team managed to make the postseason despite finishing with a sub .500 record (7-9).
In 2021, the Football Team is expected to be even better, however. The defense is incredibly young while being equally as talented. 2020 second-overall pick Chase Young is back in his sophomore season to be paired with the likes of Montez Sweat, Da’Ron Payne, and Jonathan Allen to make one of the most-intimidating front lines in the league. In the draft, Washington added uber-athletic linebacker Jamin Davis to help reinforce the middle of the defense while giving head coach Ron Rivera a new promising defender to potentially turn into the next Thomas Davis.
On offense, the team has its fair share of play-makers with receiver Terry McLaurin, tight end Logan Thomas, and running back Antonio Gibson.
One final, very intriguing, note is that this will be the first time Rashawn Slater and Young will face each other in the NFL after their 2019 clash in the Big Ten. That battle was won by Slater in the end and essentially created all of the fuel needed to launch the former Northwestern tackle up the draft board’s as one of the 2021 class’ top prospects.
You couldn’t have written a better storyline for this one.
What do you all think of the team’s Week 1 matchup? Excited? Intimidated? Let me know how you’re feeling!
