Bedford County first responders help stranded boater, dog along James River

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — First responders from across Bedford County were called out Wednesday afternoon to help with a boater stuck on the rocks near Holcomb Rock Dam on the James River.

Fire officials say crews — including three Bedford County Special Operation rescue swimmers — were alerted at approximately 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 23 for a boater in need of assistance in the James River along Holcomb Rock Road.

According to the Forest Volunteer Fire Department, units arrived on scene to find a stranded boat with a person and a dog on board. Once first responders confirmed neither the dog nor the boater were injured, the swimmers worked to removed the boat from the rock below.

The Boonsboro Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company says boats were strategically deployed at different ramps to travel down and up river to safely access the victim.

Boonsboro fire officials say the boater was brought to safety, the boat was freed from the rock, and then the boater was returned to the boat and escorted down river from obstructions.
